Not strictly true. *Implementations* of FORTRAN *traditionally* have no way of directly doing recursion. Thus, the standard does not require that recursion bw supported. However, FORTRAN is not *intrinsicly* hostile to recursion, and several implementations *have* done it, sometimes requiring the keyword 'recursive' on the affected subroutines, sometimes not.
