When expire is done, it will fire up rnews -U and sometimes the problem will show itself. I think it will happen if there is still news coming in when rnews -U is started. My recollections are vague because I thought the problem had to do with the non-standard System V derivative running on the Ridge 32 here where I have seen this problem. Since others are having this problem as well, I guess I will have to start paying it some attention.
