There is a good chance they are not getting enough plant material. Also, they like some salt in the water, have an unusually high oxygen requirement and require more space than most fish do. They seldon attain their normal size indoors, and chances are those nice big ones you saw in a store were raised in a green pool, outdoors. Apart from that they are perfect beginners fish.
