There are examples of magazines being funded by featured companies... I also think that much of the "periodicals" dealing with the PC industry are spineless limp-dicked brown-nosing entities that hope to get a "scoop" from IBM or Compaq by making their products sound like the best thing since sliced-sex! Another aspect is that the editorial personnel don't want to be critical about a product that may become the next "standard". Let's look at these great achievements of late -- OS2 - Microsoft trying to imitate UNIX. PS/2- IBM selling old AT's with a new, and relatively unadvanced bus. Presentation manager - Can you say 'Mac'? I like AST's (I think it's AST) extended bus that allows all of the multi-master capabilities of the PS2 without having to trash your inventory of existing plug-in boards.
