Actually, the problem is likely to be that the modem is in echo mode and produces status messages. It receives "Banner message\nlogin:" from the 3b2 and responds with "ERROR\n" to which the computer responds with "ERROR\nPassword:" and the modem responds with "ERROR\n...." and so forth.
