Pardon the delay and ignore me if you've heard this one...
(I get comp.sys.amiga by carrier pigeon).

To fix the missing first character on A-2000 keyboards:

WARNING: This WILL void your warranty!!!

1) Remove the cover.
2) Remove the disk drive mounting frame (4 screws, I think)
3) At the very front, where the keyboard connector enters the machine--
   find and remove capacitors C910 & C911.
4) Replace drive mount & cover.

The whole operation takes less than five minutes, and I have had no problems
since.

Disclaimer:  I am not a techie.  I need the manual to change a light bulb.
