I use a pair of Sony APM-007AV. They have built in amps and are magnetically shielded. They are fairly small 6x4x4 (HxWxD) and can be battery powered. Each speaker has its own on-off/volume control. The price is not cheap, about $100, but this includes the AC adapter. They appear designed for use with a portable CD player. They have real good sound. But not "listen two rooms away" volume. I like them, maybe you would too.
