How old is your //c?  Your problem sounds like the infamous //c
crystal problem (the story is so often told thaat it's nearly
achieved the status of lore).  The short version is that your
modem probably is NOT the source of the problem (and the techs
at PinPoint should know that full well even if they have been
reduced to having the phone answered by kids who were in middle
school when the //c was first marketed).  You may need a motherboard
swap -- Computer Resources near Hartford routinely does the
swap for free when this problem occurs; I suspect (hope) an Apple
dealer near you will do likewise (call for an appointment, the
swap takes roughly half an hour if the store tech is there, has the
part, and is expecting you).  Updated //c ROM is a fringe benefit.
