I have Chris Torek's mods installed on a 4.3BSD system.  They perform
the same function but the dialout device uses a different major device
number and the same minor number.  This means that I am not restricted
to the first 12 ttys or to 12 ttys max.

Easy.  Without these mods I would be forced to buy more telephone lines.
