A sophistocated algorithm for hyphenation is included in the TeX program, or 
Computers and Typesetting, Volume B by Donald E. Knuth.  The algorithm was
actually developed by a Stanford Ph.D student, Frank M. Liang.  It is not 
limited to English, either.
