We are looking for a bar code reader for a PC.

For example:

We'd like to keep track of inventory by inputing warehouse
items into a database through an optical bar code reader
(assuming the items have the bar code sticker).

Please include when responding; 
 
1. costs ?
2. protocols required ?
3. additional periphs ?
4. software requirements (memory upgrades?)
5. anything I didn't think of
