<It's hype.  MNP is an error detection and correction protocol.  A modem running
<at 2400 baud with MNP will probably actually have slightly (_very_ slightly)
<lower throughput than without MNP, because of the extra bits needed for the
<protocol.  I happen to think it's worth it, though, because of the error

Class 5 MNP protocol employes Lempel-Zev compression to achieve enhanced 
throughput.  Look into the Multi-Tech MultiModems; they now do class 5 
MNP.  They also support "Speed Conversion" (a necessity for class 5 MNP)
which obviates the necessity of a caller sending a BREAK to get getty
to cycle through the /etc/gettydefs entries.  Very useful on Un*x systems.
