I could handle the delays if the noise would just go away... There are PC comm programs that emulate MNP level 2. A number of comm hackers I chat with have discussed creating such a facility for UNIX, possibly as a UUCP protocol. But so far no one thought it was worth their time when cheap level 3 modems are so readily available. More than level 2 in software is difficult. You'll need a serial interface that can do the necessary bit sychronous protocol (which will vary a lot from machine to machine), and you'll need a synchronous modem (I *guess* the Hayes Smartmodem 2400 would work). More effort than it is worth, and you sure won't save any money doing it.
