Does this problem always occur or only when your default directory is set to a search list (e.g. SYS$SYSROOT:[SYSMGR] on a VAXcluster). In the latter case the problem does not only occur for tapes, but also for disk directories. I do not completely understand the problem. But try the following commands when you have a cluster: $ SET DEFAULT SYS$SYSROOT:[000000] $ DIRECTORY SYS$SYSDEVICE You will also see each file listed twice. F.
