The atari is not the only machine which inherits this disk scheme from the ibm
pc.  I recently read in infoworld that OS-2, in keeping with upward
compatibility with the pc, uses it too.  I think I recall the article said
that OS-2 is 8 times slower than Xenix for file intensive applications because
of this.
