Your statement might bear some validity, but we emplaced a name brand known good and working 20 MHz '386 motherboard in the box for a weekend, complete with 4 megs of simm ram, and experienced the same problems. We have swapped about several well known sio cards, including a dumb 8 digiboard (presently on loan to another system and running fine under xenix.) The only parts of this system that have not been test exchanged are the CGA card, the HD controller card, and the fast HD's themselves( a 40 meg seagate, and a 72 meg miniscribe.) These too will be swapped for testing, but all indications are that the problems lie with the software. I have witnessed the same problems igloo sees on stock Televideo and Tetung machines. Maybe they were hardware problems too. Strange that xenix runs just fine on them. Igloo now sports a trailblazer, running polls at 9600. The new sio driver here for beta test from uport works nicely.
