I'm sorry, I don't get that much news at a shot to run your test though I'd be suprised if it did anything to the system. I've also set the Nice value in defs.h(?) in the news software to run the uncompression at a lower priority. I have catted (sp?) large text files without any problem while news was unpacking, at the same time as my wife was working on the 9600 baud vt200 terminal. You mentioned an improvement going from the 65ms drives to the 40ms drives. Perhaps the reason for my success is my faster 28ms drives (maxtor 1140). I've had this system running since I installed version 2.3 with dosMerge for a couple months now without any crash at all.
