    I believe that you can have extended graphics (e.g., line and box
    characters) by setting a DIP switch.  Also you can still print
    italics using the ESC 4 command.  It also allow 10, 12, 15 pitches
    on all three standard fonts and proportional spacing on the two
    LQ fonts.  I haven't seen the quality on other Epson LQ series but
    the LQ-500 certainly looks letter quality to me.

    The LQ-500 is a narrow printer; but when using 12 pitch condensed
    mode, it may print 160 characters per line.
