The storyt I read was that Seattle Computer products was hired by Microsoft 
to write a Z-80 version of DOS for Microsoft and as a result received 
an unlimited license for DOS. Although they supposedly succeeded, it 
became a mute point since the equipment wasn't up to the task of operating 
in a reasonable manner. The drawbacks were so severe in the available 
memory and speed that it was irrelevant, especially with the fade to 
black of the Z-80 processor. Remember that it was not enough to be 
MS-DOS compatible, but was necessary to be IBM compatible.
