When I have the switches set this way, I can do whatever I want to the PC including rebooting, and the modem does not hang up. Procomm drops the DTR line when it exits and this is what causes your modem to hang up. If you don't have the modem switches, you could build a cable which would tie the pins 6, 8, and 20 all together, and then your modem probably would not hang up when you exit.
