Unfortunately, yours truly messed up (error 299: excessive operator ignorance). The problem was that I had ftp'd the files using binary mode. SUMEX has a very different word size from the HP-UX machine I used, and the bits were all where they shouldn't be. Trying it in ASCII mode showed good ol' familiar Binhex files.
