Thanks everyone. I got a lot of offers of help, and a lot of good advice
on what to do with these puppies. Unfortunately, yours truly messed up
(error 299: excessive operator ignorance).

The problem was that I had ftp'd the files using binary mode. SUMEX has
a very different word size from the HP-UX machine I used, and the bits
were all where they shouldn't be. Trying it in ASCII mode showed good ol'
familiar Binhex files.

I think I'm fine from here.
