What is the OFFICIAL method to install drivers at boot time,
if it is neither a SCSI nor a slot-device. I know how anybody
is doing it, but is that correct?

Does the extended _Open call work on old ROMs, ie is there 
a patch in the system? Does it allocate a (unittable) slot
for you?
