You might try an HP-94 hand-held.  It supports an optical bar code reader
and can be carried from place to place.  It should then be able to download
to a desktop or mainframe.

Contact an HP sales representative to find out more.  I believe we use it
here in the lab to take inventory (down to the memory boards :-)
