The only previous window system I've worked with (other than just playing around) is the Mac window stuff. I definitely would take NeWS over the Mac toolbox any day. Some of my co-workers have used MS windows and X-windows. They also prefer NeWS. The NeWS extensions to postscript are pretty seamless and do not strike you as being "warts". As far as portability goes, I've taken a cursory look at the NeWS server code and it looks like ALOT of effort went into making NeWS portable. NeWS looks like it was designed to be portable from day one. I don't know too much about X11 but if it's anything like the X10 code, NeWS wins hands down portability-wise.
