I have spent about a week writing a few of them myself with impressively robust and rapid results; however, I'd rather not write an entire layer of user interface code for the sake of one project. For comparison, I have programmed both Microsoft Windows and Sapphire (Carnegie-Mellon's SPICE project) with distaste because the amount of work to bring up a mock version usually accounted for 20% of the total project's effort. Ok. That is an exaggeration, but it is fair to place X-Windows in a category beyond those other environments. So, any ideas or pointers to RFC's about toolkits?
