I wish it were true "he didn't know any better".  In fact, he designed
Algol W long before Pascal, and Algol W is better in almost every
respect.  (In fact the only really brain-damaged aspect of Pascal
that has its roots in Algol W is the relative priorities of comparison
(<, >, <=, etc.) and boolean (and, or) operations).
