Since each command executes from the shell rather than from a monolithic mailer, you have the full power of Unix available to process your messages. I find things like redirection, command substitution and history indispensable in dealing with mail. It is fairly trivial to bring up a walking menu interface to MH in a Sun shelltool window(*) so that you can do everything except type message responses without ever putting your hand on the keyboard.
