Recent postings in wreck.audio have asked about the useful life or recording
tape.  I ran across this reference to a National Bureau of Standards report
and thought it might help answer the questions.  I am cross posting this
message to comp.misc since the same information will apply to diskettes.
Most magnetic audio (and computer) tape and floppy disks use a polyester
base which is coated with appropriate magnetic particles; Dupont's mylar (reg)
is a polyester.  Cellulose acetate tape is not in common use any more.  I do
not have a copy of this report, so don't ask me for details:
