EMACS was a minor contender. And each and every speaker, as I recall, acknowledged TECO to be the first real DEC editor which they learned (e.g. `I was a teen-age TECO user') and the standard of comparison when evaluating the features of their favorite editor. Except, of course, for the speaker who defended TECO. Ed
