Problem solved:

Thanks to some direct help from a fellow "reader" at Digital we are now able
to reuse those TK-52K tapes that had been used on a TK-50 drive.

We tried the bulk erase procedure mentioned by several people with what at
first appeared to be little success.  As it turns out, our bulk eraser was a
little underpowered.  Using a stronger unit solved the problem for us.  We
also took the tape cartridges out of their protective cases this time
around.
