The initial version did not update /etc/utmp (and thus avoided some non-portabilities), but Oliver Laumann upgraded it later on (providing different #ifdefs for 4.2BSD and 4.3BSD). If I'm not totally mistaken, this patch was published in comp.sources.unix about a month after the original version.
