However, the requirements for efficient pre-emptive multitasking are more than those just on the central processor. The entire architecture of the machine has to be built with an eye on multitasking. Multitasking OS's are incredibly complex and are very demanding on on the computer's resources. Just the context switch requires a fair amount of fiddling. -Russell Buyse.
