I think Apple has already done most, if not all, of those things.  They built
one from scratch, with no Apple II, II+, or //e compatibility, and provided the
fast graphics interface that was mentioned.

Then they named it "Macintosh"!!

I suspect that most people who buy a computer called an "Apple // <whatever>"
are buying it *because* of the downward compatibility, not *in spite of it*.
The other folks already have their Macs, and seem quite happy with them.
(Ecstatic, even, if you talk to a real "Mac-o-phile")

Then there are those few who bought a IIGS thinking it was a "mini-Mac"!
That's just not the case, nor has Apple ever represented it as such.

The Finder *is* slow...  but there are a number of good alternatives which
provide all the capabilities of the Finder, and an increased level of
performance.  (APW, ECP, ORCA, and a few others, too.)
