Our machine is a VAX 11/750 with two CDC 9772 disks. A few days ago, one of our filesystems suffered minor damage and we tried restoring it from our back up tapes. Lo and behold, we then discovered that our dump / restore combination really doesn't work. When we try restore r or restore x, we get a lot of "resync restore: skipped num blocks" repeatedly and the restore aborts with ". not found on tape?" If we try restore -i and then a "add ." the program complains about the same corrupted directory and aborts (i.e. it doesn't add all the sub directories correctly to be extracted). We poked around a bit, but none of the dump/restore combinations we have tried thus far seem to work. Now, has anyone else had this problem? What's the needed fix? -Sundar please reply to: sundar@wheaties.ai.mit.edu, sundar@hermes.ai.mit.edu
