I tend to think that the later is the wave of the future and that networking single-user workstations/PCs is only a temporary situation until a "network" OS emerges to make life easier. I would recommend reading the Position Paper presented by Rob Pike and Ken Thompson at the IEEE Workshop on Operating Systems this past fall.
