It may well work just fine for a BSD system, however it doesn't work worth a darn for SYSV. The sysv function should read: (defvar te-stty-string "stty -nl sane erase  echoe echo" "Command string (to be interpreted by \"sh\") which sets the modes of the virtual terminal to be appropriate for interactive use.") which should work just fine for usgs out there.
