The problem was NOT with GNU's split, but with the underlying tar
file.  

/u/emacs/edist.tar-18.50.Z (hard linked to /u/emacs/edist.tar.Z) has
been successfully uncompressed and untarred both on prep (a VAX
11/750) and a Sun 3.

Split files are under /u/emacs/edist.tar-18.50.Z-split and cat/cmp-ed
against /u/emacs/edist.tar-18.50.Z.

Remember to set your ftp to binary mode.
