Thanks for the feedback.  Although some of you were a bit vociferous I think
that all the responses I received were useful and well thought out.  We did
do an implementation of the concept (adding a serial number as a TCP option
field) and it worked fine when talking to a 4.3 bsd system.

I think that we are going to take a different tack.  The UDP broadcast idea
seems to be the most reasonable I have heard so far.  I will let you know
where we go.
