It is an program-level interface to the protocol, and is intended as an alternative to the BSD socket library. It is implemented for the AT&T-supported local networks such as TCP/IP, Starlan and Datakit (insert appropriate trademarkings here) as of System V release 3, with a common set of routines for open/close/read/write/etc. The WIN/3B package for TCP/IP on the 3Bx machines provides most of the system calls for SVr2 machines, as well.
