I use Less sometimes to look at files.  Something that occasionally
happens has always bothered me.  In the middle of the file, display on the
screen suddenly slows down to about one or two words *per second*,
with one or two disk gronks per word.

A similar mystery:  downloading files with vt1002.6 in Kermit mode.  Why
are there 3 or 4 disk gronks each time a chunk of the file is written to disk?
