I heard of a device a couple of years ago which was designed to handle
this problem.  It had a computer sensor system like the current thing,
but rather than putting on the breaks as the current one does it would
fire two retro-rockets mounted to the front of the car.  I don't think
I heard what eventually happened to this device.
