The F16 and F18 jets are capable of 'going ballistic' because the thrust they generate exceeds their weight. Thus the origin of the 'Saturn V' manuever where a pilor points his plane straight up and climbs. This works up to about 40,000 feet where the air starts to get thin. Jet doesn't allow this.
