could anyone out there tell me how to playback digitized sound samples on 
the ST?

i have tried taking say 8-bit linear digitized audio samples (00 - ff
amplitudes) and piping them to the sound chip directly to the 4-bit
d/a level register on the chip (using a table lookup to get as close to
the 4-bit companded output of the chip as possible) but the results are
very noisy and always sound like hisses (even plain sine waves). i know
programs like STSPEAK.TOS and the various playback programs on bbs's
can get reasonably decent sound. are they using some undocumented features
i don't know about? atari was no help (jfeagans and some h/w guys did not
know how to do it...).
