Following the lead of one of the net pioneers (Lenny T.?) I rang up
AT&T, and a few days later had my 3.51 fixes.  I don't know how fast
terminal emulation ought to be, but it is significantly faster now.
Noticably.  Also the call screen hasn't popped up on my yet tonight...
a first.  So try this before totally abandoning asynch.
