Tom, there is such an option, no need to make a patch to the exe. I find
this  very useful, as I have had to rename PKARC to "ARC" (sacrilege!) in
order to work properly with ARCmail, and needed obsolete-version compat-
ibility 'cuz someone else downstream is probably still using the obsolete
version...

+In   addition   to   the   command  line  compatibilty  options,  a
+configuration file for PKARC  can  be  used  to  specify  backwards
+compatibility  modes.   The  following strings can be placed in the
