I have recently seen Practical Peripherals 1200 and 2400 baud
internal and external modems advertised at prices that are less
than half of what I have been paying for the comparable Hayes
models.  If anyone has been using these modems, I would 
certainly like to hear your reactions regarding compatibility,
support, reliability, etc.
