Did you try using DEBUG and the built-in lowlevel format
routine at c800:0005 in the WD ROM? WD distributes nice
instruction sheets for setting up the formatting.
  I've had mixed luck trying to read drives formatted with
one brand of controller with another controller, so I do suggest
a lowelevel format, followed by FDISK and FORMAT from DOS.
