If the Compaq controller can accomodate two drives, there's no reason you couldn't run a cable to the 30 megabyte drive to use it externally. You'll have to run an external power cable too. Basically, you'll have a separate control cable, and a daisy-chained data cable between the internal and external drives, and controller.
