Well, I solved my own problem.  I took the cable out of the back of the 
printer and gave it a good hard look - there were only SEVEN pins.
Just to be sure, I went in to work and took a cable from the back of
a Mac Plus, brought it home, and installed it.  The printer now works
like a charm.

Funny thing about only seven pins in an eight pin connector ...
