As fate would have it I was stranded all morning at an airport waiting for a plane, and the issue of Time was on the newstands. I guess you have to allow for a fair bit of hype in these things. Even so the article on AI seemed fairly over-optimistic to me. Sure there are many "second- wave" applications of expert systems out there, but there are also a lot of research issues open.
